In August 2008, a group of four universities – Fukuoka Institute of Technology (representative university), Kyushu University, Fukuoka Women’s University and Seinan Gakuin University – came together to form a consortium to focus on environmental and energy issues at the postgraduate level.
The consortium was selected as one of MEXT, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s strategic inter-university cooperation support projects for 2008, part of MEXT’s support for university education reform.As a result, the four universities signed an agreement and officially established Consortium Fukuoka on September 19, 2008.With interest in environmental and energy issues on the increase, universities are being called upon to publish research and make policy recommendations to help resolve such issues, as well as making an academic contribution by training and producing human resources equipped with high levels of expertise.
In addition to public demand, Consortium Fukuoka is also driven by individual suggestions and advice from local authorities (Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, Fukuoka Prefecture, Fukuoka City) and leading companies in the local area (Kyushu Electric Power, Seibu Gas, etc.).
The four universities, located along the coast Fukuoka City, intend to consciously combine their existing expertise in scientific fields, the humanities and social sciences, and reinforce ties with the community (local authorities, industry, local residents) and other Asian countries, in an effort to make a concrete intellectual contribution to resolving environmental and energy issues.
The aim is also to achieve even higher standards of education and research, as a regional “intellectual hub” that will effectively harness each of the universities’ educational and research resources.
Consortium Strategy Council
(once a year)
Consortium Fukuoka’s decision-making body, consisting of the presidents or chancellors of each of the four universities
Consortium Promotion Council
(once a month)
Implementation body consisting of unit and team leaders selected from the four universities and members of the secretariat
Advisory Board (once a year)
Advisory body consisting of outside experts from government agencies, private companies and other organizations, designed to independently assess Consortium Fukuoka’s overall activities from a third-party perspective
Consortium Offices (permanent)
Offices set up on a permanent basis at Fukuoka Institute of Technology and Kyushu University in order to perform functions such as coordinating activities in the capacity of secretariat, organizing meetings, maintaining the website and database, and arranging consultancy services for companies and other organizations
